DVD's and information on Aliwal Shoal Scuba Diving
|
The week started just like any other week - as much fishing as possible! The difference this week was that I actually caught plenty! The sea was beautiful, blue and crystal clear. I remember fishing off my fishingski with my friend on Thursday and at 22 metres we could easily see the bottom. Little did I know this was the calm before the storm! I checked the weather on buoyweather.com all week the wind was calm and the swells were low and then March 19th..... The waves start March 20th..... 2007 HUGE waves hit Umkomaas I was awaken early Monday morning by my wife about 6am She said "look out of the window" "You won't believe your eyes". How true she was, the swell was huge and the noise of the waves crashing on the beach was deafening. I quickly got ready and headed to the beach front where I was confronted by a sight which stopped me in my tracks. The service road to the South of Umkomaas was very badly damaged and getting worse! Slowly more people and emergency services turned up and closed the road to cars. As it got lighter the local press started turning up to picture and film this catastrophe. I walked further North and discovered the road was damaged towards the entrance to Umkomaas. In the distance I could see the waves crashing into the Umkomaas Lodge and Waves restaurant. When I got closer I realised that the tidal pool and the boat workshop were badly damaged. I was also told that a Landrover had disappeared into the sea. I later seen the vehicle in the surf. I walked further down the road with a Danish guest, Mike Bentley, and Jim to discover that the road leading to the river was very badly damaged and getting worse.
